Here is the completed painting still on the stretching board. This painting was a lot of fun to work on. It was the first time painting on Fabrino paper which is almost twice as expensive as the expensive paper I usually work on. I thought Arches paper was awesome and it really is. A lot of fine watercolor paper is just a little off white and because I have been sticking to transparent watercolor painting I feel like the extra fine pigments I have been using really shine. The subject matter is of the inside of the Pike Bar and Grill in Long Beach. There was a band setting up and we were sitting in the middle facing the bar. I have been wanting to work on paintings of people at my local bar for a while. These folks were having a good looking conversation. I couldn’t wait till I got to the bartenders shirt. Almost as much fun as painting the dreads. I wanted to keep it somewhat loose and detailed at the same time. Also if you look at the final you can see a Wonder Woman shadow box next to the flash art. This place has a lot of things in it that I want to paint. I’m glad it is two blocks away from me and the fish and chips are pretty tasty!

My palet is a war zone of flesh tones and a really nice grey I mixed up. I am glad I did a lot of color theory in school but I still am amazed at how neutral they some out when I think about how vivid the pigments I mixed to get them were. The red and yellow I use are like candy. Here I drew in faint outlines of my composition and begun with the darkest value first. So much pigment was needed to get this area as dark as possible. Just like I don’t use white to create like I also don’t use black to remove it. Instead it is a saturation of colors.

Above is the original value study I did. I find I learn a lot from these. I get to work out some things here that help make my compositions better when I need to decide what details are needed or not to tell the story.
